The United States is the world’s largest wine market, with the largest population of regular wine drinkers and the largest amount of imported wine (by value).

The United States has been nominated by Wine Intelligence as the world’s most attractive wine market for the third year in a row in 2019 based on its high volume and value and positive economic indicators. Per capita consumption of wine in the US is currently 9.9 liters per head (2018).

The seven biggest wine-consuming states are California, Florida, New York, Texas, New Jersey, Illinois and Massachusetts. They account for over half of all US wine consumption. Off-premise is the largest channel in terms of volume with an 80% share of the market.

Pop! The Rise of American Sparkling Wine.

The consumption of sparkling wine in the United States has doubled since the 1970s. Thanks to champagnes imported from France, “American champagnes,” and sparkling wines produced by French companies established on the U.S. West Coast, the American market is bubbling over! A report published last June by the U.S. beers, wines and spirits research firm Shanken showed that sales of French champagne in the United States are up for the third year in a row. Champagnes imported from France only make up 6% of the consumption of sparkling wines in the United States. More than half of the 261 million bottles polished off in the U.S.A. in 2017 were produced on American soil — mainly in California, Virginia, Oregon, New Mexico, Washington State and New York State.
